Mediviron Setia Indah Clinic is dedicated to promoting women’s health through our Free HPV Immunization Program. We’re offering the first 100 women a free first dose of the Gardasil 4 vaccine, which protects against cervical cancer caused by HPV.

Before receiving the vaccine, it’s essential to understand what HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is and its role in cervical cancer development, empowering you to make informed decisions about your health.

What is HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

HPV, or Human Papillomavirus, is a sexually transmitted infection that often affects young individuals. As seen in the image, HPV can cause cervical cancer, which begins with abnormal cell growth in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus connected to the vagina. The infection is usually cleared by the immune system, but in some cases, it persists and can lead to cancer.

The HPV vaccine works similarly to other vaccines by stimulating the immune system to develop antibodies to fight against HPV. By doing so, the body can recognize and combat the virus before it has the chance to infect healthy cells. This helps in preventing the development of cancers related to HPV. Getting the vaccine early is key to ensuring protection.

Understanding the Causes of HPV: How the Virus Spreads

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is primarily spread through direct skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide, affecting both men and women. The virus can be transmitted even when an infected person shows no symptoms, which makes it easily spread without being aware.

There are over 100 different types of HPV, with some causing common warts, while others can lead to more serious conditions such as cervical, throat, or genital cancers.

The virus commonly affects individuals in their late teens to early 30s, especially those who are sexually active. Younger individuals are at higher risk of contracting HPV due to increased likelihood of new sexual partners. While the immune system often clears the infection on its own, persistent HPV infections can lead to complications. Vaccination, such as Gardasil 4, is key in preventing high-risk strains of HPV.

Taking preventive measures, including getting vaccinated, is crucial in protecting yourself from HPV and its potential complications, such as cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine, like Gardasil 4, is a safe and effective way to reduce your risk and safeguard your health.

Prevention of HPV: Protecting Yourself from the Virus

Before Contracting HPV:

  1. Vaccination: Get the HPV vaccine (such as Gardasil 4) to protect against the most harmful strains of the virus, especially before becoming sexually active.
  2. Safe Sexual Practices: Use condoms and limit the number of sexual partners to reduce exposure to the virus.
  3. Regular Screenings: Women should have regular Pap smears and HPV tests to detect any early signs of cervical abnormalities.

After Contracting HPV:

  1. Follow-Up Care: If diagnosed with HPV, continue regular screenings to monitor for any complications, such as abnormal cell growth.
  2. Treatment for Symptoms: While there is no cure for HPV, treatments are available for the symptoms, such as genital warts or precancerous changes in the cervix.
  3. Healthy Lifestyle: Strengthen your immune system through a healthy diet, regular exercise, and quitting smoking to help your body fight the virus naturally.

What is the HPV Vaccine?

The HPV vaccine is a safe and effective immunization designed to protect against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), particularly the strains most likely to cause cervical, genital, and throat cancers, as well as genital warts. The vaccine works by stimulating the body’s immune system to produce antibodies that fight the virus before it can infect cells.

There are different types of HPV vaccines, with Gardasil 4 being one of the most widely used. It protects against four major strains of HPV—types 6, 11, 16, and 18. Types 16 and 18 are responsible for most cases of cervical cancer, while types 6 and 11 cause the majority of genital warts.

The vaccine is most effective when administered before exposure to the virus, typically in preteens or teens. However, it can still provide protection for individuals up to age 45. By getting vaccinated, you significantly reduce the risk of HPV-related cancers and other complications.
